Motion of a Heavy Impurity through a Bose-einstein Condensate. Typeset Using Revt E X 1

چکیده
We study motion of a point-like impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate at T = 0. By solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in a perturbative manner we calculate the induced mass of the impurity and the drag force on the impurity in 3D, 2D and 1D cases. The relationship between the induced mass and the normal mass of fluid is found and coincides with the result of the Bogoliubov theory. The drag force appears for supersonic motion of the impurity. In 1D the drag force is investigated also on the basis of the exact Lieb-Liniger theory, using the dynamic form factor, which has been evaluated by the Haldane method of the calculation of correlation functions. In this theory the force appears for an arbitrarily small velocity of the impurity. The possibility of measuring the form factor in existing experiments is noted.

Impurity Expulsion From a Bose-Einstein Condensate
When a sizable, hard-sphere-like impurity is placed in a trapped BoseEinstein condensate, it will create a hole in the condensate wave function. Since it costs more energy to drill a hole at the wave function’s maximum (near the trap center) than at its minimum (near the trap edge), the impurity will be expelled from the condensate. This suggests that C60 molecules freely falling through a cond...

Using the explicit forms of eigenstates for linearized operator related to a matrix version of Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, soliton perturbation theory is developed for the $F=1$ bright spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. A small disturbance of the integrability condition can be considered as a small correction to the integrable equation. By choosing appropriate perturbation, the soli...
متن کاملSuppression and enhancement of impurity scattering in a Bose-Einstein condensate.
Impurity atoms propagating at variable velocities through a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate were produced using a stimulated Raman transition. The redistribution of momentum by collisions between the impurity atoms and the stationary condensate was observed in a time-of-flight analysis. The collisional cross section was dramatically reduced when the impurity velocity was reduced below the cond...

The quantized vortex state is investigated in a Bose-Einstein condensate, confined in a multiply connected geometry formed by a Laguerre-Gaussian optical trap. Solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation variationally, we show that the criterium for vortex stability is that the interatomic interaction strength must exceed a critical interaction strength. The time evolution of a freely expanding Lague...

We have measured the relative phase of two Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) using a time-domain separated-oscillatory-field condensate interferometer. A single two-photon coupling pulse prepares the double condensate system with a well-defined relative phase; at a later time, a second pulse reads out the phase difference accumulated between the two condensates. We find that the accumulated phase...
